School Bus Mechanic

TITLE:  SCHOOL BUS MECHANIC

CLASSIFICATION:  FULLTIME, HOURLY, 12 MONTHS PER YEAR

JOB SUMMARY:

Under supervision of the Assistant Director of Transportation and the Supervisor of Equipment and Vehicles, this individual is responsible for tasks related to repair and servicing corporation vehicles, specifically school buses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*  Repair and service diesel engines, transmissions and related components on corporation school buses and/or other related service equipment.

*  Read, interpret, and understand documentation related to equipment and repairs.

*  Lift up to 50 pounds.

*  Work "on call"  24 hrs/day

 *  Demonstrate an excellent work attendance record.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

The candidate for this position shall;  possess experience as a diesel mechanic,  possess certification in air brakes or ability to obtain it, be familiar with transportation operations and radio communications, hold a commercial driver's license with passenger transport capability within this corporation, be willing to achieve other certifications as deemed appropriate by the Assistant Director.

Due to the transportation emergency plan it is required that the candidate for this position possess a commercial driver's license with proper endorsements to transport students.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIS REQUIRED:

*  Operational knowledge of mechanical equipment and tools utilized in the performance of maintenance and repair of transportation equipment.

*  Ability to communicate via radio equipment.

*  Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting skills for related electrical and mechanical systems.

*  Welding & fabrication.

*  Safety training related to equipment and job requirements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

*  Applicant must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

*  Superior driving record.

*  This position is represented by a bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the Custodial/Maintenance Agreement with the Vigo County School Corporation.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

*  Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.

*  Considerable physical activity.  Requires heavy physical work;  heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders and working in cramped quarters.  Physical work is a primary part (50%) of job.

*  Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
