Position Title:                Principal of Terre Haute North Vigo High School

 

Qualifications:              Required:  State of Indiana School Administrator’s License.  At least five years successful experience in public education, part of which shall have been as a classroom teacher and/ or an administrator.

 

Desired: Preferred knowledge of secondary curriculum. Preferred understanding of current graduation pathway requirements.

SUMMARY: The Principal is responsible for administering all academic programming operating in and from Terre Haute North Vigo High School. Under the direction of the Director of Secondary Instruction, this position serves as the site administrator and instructional leader of Terre Haute North Vigo High School. The principal administers school-wide curriculum and all phases of the instructional program and management of the facility; supervises and evaluates assigned personnel; provides leadership, administrative, and supervisory skills for the educational development of students as well as to promote parent and community involvement; provides communication between the district and other educational and community partnerships.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned):

  1. Knows educational theory and practice thoroughly, and is fully informed about new developments.
  2. Administers the school so as to satisfy the conditions of the educational objectives.
  3. Establishes and maintains an educational facility which is concerned with the individual needs of all students, instructional, and non-instructional personnel assigned to the building.
  4. Assists in the recruitment, selection and recommendation of personnel to fill vacancies.
  5. Assumes the role as the educational leader with the responsibility for the supervision of personnel with the intent that each individual member functions within the framework of established guides and procedures.
  6. Provides leadership and guidance in developing building programs to increase the efficiency of the staff in meeting the educational objectives as well as for the functioning within the framework of adopted policies.
  7. Establishes practices within the guidance department and the school which will assure that each student will be viewed and respected as an individual whose educational program will be directed toward his/her unique needs.
  8. Initiates practices for the maintenance of proper discipline within the framework of adopted policies and law.
  9. Directs procedures and develops criteria for the efficient maintenance of facilities, equipment, and grounds.
  10. Establishes and maintains efficient and effective procedures for maintenance of all student records in accordance with adopted procedures and law.
  11. Prepares all required and requested reports accurately and submits according to established deadlines.
  12. Is responsible for the management of budgets within the framework of approved appropriations and guidelines.
  13. Is responsible for oversight and supervision of all extracurricular activities.
  14. Is responsible to the Indiana High School Athletic Association for the conduct of the interscholastic program for all students in accordance with established procedures, policies, rules, and regulations.
  15. Performs teacher/ staff observations and evaluations.
  16. Understands and embraces corporation policies, procedures, and goals for diversity and inclusion for students and staff.
  17. Maintains safety and security for students and staff at the highest level by implementing policies and procedures as set for by the corporation, law enforcement, and State law.
  18. Demonstrates effective instructional, organizational, and administrative leadership.
  19. Sets school wide operational priorities and manages time effectively.
  20. Analyzes problems, identifies potential solutions and makes appropriate and effective decisions.
  21. Communicates effectively and in a timely fashion.
  22. Other duties as assigned

Other Requirements:

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as computer software manuals and procedure manuals.  Ability to write procedures for employees and communications to employees.  Ability to communicate with employees to train. Ability to translate others’ rough ideas into polished pieces.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities:  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of School Trustees policies.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be expected to work at a computer for several hours at a time.  The noise level in this environment is quiet.  Driving a vehicle to conduct work at school sites is required.  Some non-standard work hours may be necessary.
